Mekong-Lancang countries urged to set up a hotline

VGP – Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh called for enhancing sustainable use and management of Mekong water resources in a harmonious and responsible manner to ensure sustainable development of the region.

Deputy PM, FM Minh made the statement while attending the 2nd Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministerial Meeting in Cambodia on December 23.

He also asked the member countries to focus on accelerating regional connectivity, give priority to implementing major infrastructure projects, and improve the capacity of the member countries in realizing trade facilitation policies.

The Mekong-Lancang countries need to strengthen cooperation in sustainable agriculture development, support the application of advanced technologies in agriculture, and form agricultural value chain.

Deputy PM, FM Minh also suggested that the member countries set up a hotline to timely share information and address urgent situations like sudden floods, droughts, and incidents that cause water pollution.

During the meeting, FMs from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam, and China reviewed the implementation of the outcomes the first Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Leaders’ Meeting in Hainan, China last March and discussed on orientations for the area’s future cooperation.

The FMs acknowledged the positive progresses of the cooperation framework, including the formation of cooperation structure and content as well as five priority fields of water resources, production capacity, cross-border trade, agriculture and poverty reduction.

They agreed to soon develop a five-year action plan to maintain the impetus of this cooperation mechanism and launch the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Fund to assist member countries to implement joint projects.

The FMs also agreed to increase the effectiveness of information sharing and coordination among the member countries./.
